I am now offering my services as a DONA-trained Postpartum Doula to the Lawrence, Topeka and Kansas City communities.
My passion for women's health has lead me to this work as a
postpartum doula. It is a great joy for me to work with families during this unique and exciting time in their lives.
As a postpartum doula I support the mother in her transition into motherhood with her new baby. Just as each birth is different, so is each baby! My support occurs during the "fourth-trimester" or the baby's first three months of life outside the womb. Although the mother, is my first and foremost priority, I also provide support to the rest of the family, pets included, through their adjustment to having a new family member.
Postpartum Doula support can be especially helpful for:
- Families with multiples (twins, triplets)
- A mother who has undergone major abdominal surgery, such as a Cesarean, and therefore needs extra rest and cannot carry anything heavier than her baby for weeks after the birth
- Families with children and or pets who may need some extra attention now that there's a new baby
- Families whose extended family may not live in the area or is not available for daily care and support during the postpartum period
I offer education, companionship and nonjudgmental support and essentially this can be helpful for just about anyone. Historically, women gave birth and raised their babies and children together in community, not alone. In the modern world our extended family is spread out across the country, partners are working full-time jobs to support the family and mom and baby manage the best they can on their own. This is where a postpartum doula comes in!
Neutral, nonjudgmental support is so vital at this time in a woman's life!
In addition to basic support my services include:
- Assisting with newborn care, meal preparation and light household tidying
- Offering
evidence-based information on infant feeding, emotional and physical
recovery from birth, infant soothing and coping skills for new parents
- Making appropriate referrals when necessary (For example: local lactation consultants, support groups and more)
